The science of project management was founded, in large part, to manage risk and prevent it from negatively affecting project objectives, schedules, and budgets.

Risk in any project is unavoidable. Fortunately, there are proven methods to identify and analyze potential threats so that appropriate risk responses are developed and the project's level of exposure is controlled.

Risk analysis has become an important discipline within the field of project management. It involves prioritizing risks and assessing each identified risk's probability of occurrence and potential impact, whether positive or negative. This paper explores both qualitative and quantitative risk analysis techniques applied to the environmental industry. It explains how to incorporate risk assessment into forecasting and shows how a project was able to increase forecast accuracy from 50% to 95% by using the described approach.

Let us first understand the terms i.e., planning & scheduling:
Planning is control of time on a project by:
•    Project Plans which optimise expenditure of time, recognise cost implications and reflect the contractual obligations for the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of plant facilities.
•    Regular updates of all project activities and their inter relationships.
•    Early indication of deviations from the approved project programme so that action can be taken to minimise their effect.
It is to be noted that key elements of plans are Scope of work and Method of execution including WBS.

This is the era of tough competition in Construction business. Stiff competition in turnkey Engineer, Procure, Construct (or EPC) business has given the Customers plenty of choices and, as usual, Customers are the kings. Increasing trend to go for competitive Lump Sum Turnkey Contracts has narrowed down the margins in EPC business. In Lump Sum Turnkey contracts, maximum risk being to the EPC Contractor, the risks are continually increasing to the contractor. It is, however, every contractor’s endeavor to minimize the risk and cost and maximize the gains. Through this paper, the author has suggested a balanced approach in this direction with main focus on Engineering. The author recognizes that Engineering is one of the most important activities for an EPC execution and hence has stressed on optimizing the engineering performance (and hence cost).  Be it for Bidding, for Cost Reduction,  for Procurement or for Construction, Engineering is the key to success for all of these. Optimizing engineering cost necessarily means Increasing Productivity, without shifting focus from the quality, i.e., improving the overall Performance of Engineering. To improve performance, the current level of performance and target level of performance must be known, and then only one can try to approach towards the goal (target). Thus, it is imperative to have a comprehensive and credible Performance Tracking system. The traditional approach was to measure Engineering Performance in terms of Schedule and Jobhours only. Schedule performance provides the progress with respect to schedule while Jobhour performance gives the relative earnings with respect to spent hours. By measuring merely these two parameters, the real performance in respect of savings / loss to the project due to design development and cost of engineering were not being monitored. So, a comprehensive approach is required to measure the overall Engineering performance taking the latter two factors into the account, so that the corrective actions are in right area at right time.

Construction industry is flooded with the Fast Track Projects these days and there is always a pressure on the contractor to bid the lowest, resulting in low profit margins. To achieve the dismal profit margins, it requires massive all-round efforts to develop a schedule and control it efficiently.

Delays may occur any time on a project, even with all sincere efforts to control a project and complete on time. Delay means loss of profit and/ or risk of facing hefty liquidated damages. In absence of proper analysis and documentation, the contractor may lose grounds for delay claim, though the delay is due to the sole responsibility of the other parties involved.

Across the globe, research is being done to reduce the capital cost of power projects to ultimately reduce the cost of unit power supplied to end consumer. This paper attempts to identify one of the ways of capital cost reduction i.e., by designing and executing multiple power projects simultaneously using standardization technique. Standardization is the extensive use of processes or procedures, products or components, in which there is regularity, or repetition and a record of successful practice. Using this concept, one can maximize the benefits of design standardization and bulk procurement.

Current methods for assessing activity progress, calculating project position and forecasting project completion (including the use of earned value analysis) are examined in this paper.  The disadvantages of current forecasting methods are discussed with special reference to single data point extrapolation and the difficulty for non-specialists in analysing s-curves.  A different method of forecasting project completion using simple linear regression and time series analysis is proposed which has real practical applications for project managers and allows them to easily and rapidly produce position and forecast data in a format that is understood by layman and specialist.

With the growing use of project management software to analyse construction delays, comes the often overlooked question – how does the software really work? This is of course a pretty meaty query and way too big for a single article. But within it are some more manageable ‘bite-sized’ issues.
